Saint Luke's & The Winged Ox.
My third outing for this blog was to Saint Luke's & The Winged Ox, and while I had been to Saint Luke's (the venue area) in the past for gigs, I had never been to The Winged Ox (the bar/restaurant) before - making it the first place I hadn't previously been to, so I had a fresh perspective going in. Located in the east end (just round the corner from the Barrowlands), Saint Luke's & The Winged Ox is just outside the city centre, yet still easy to get to.
Straight off the bat, it has to be mentioned that The Winged Ox are dog-friendly, which will always bode well in my book, going so far as to have a (albeit small) canine-committed menu, and featuring their Dog Of The Week on their Instagram page (@stlukesglasgow). While I did take my dog along, I forgot to take any pictures of her (no hard feelings if you stop reading at this point). Inside, The Winged Ox has a large bar/restaurant area, lit by neon signs and fairy lights, and with walls covered in posters advertising gigs all across Glasgow, which makes the wait for your drinks and food just a little more interesting.
The Winged Ox has a huge selection of drinks, including cocktails named after the Ten Commandments, and a gin of the week, but also boast their very own Winged Ox lager and IPA (both brewed at Drygate brewery, just two minutes from the bar itself) and I decided to try both, since I couldn't decide which I wanted, and would recommend trying either of both of them. The food was also delicious, with a whole host of different types of foods, including a decent choice of vegetarian and vegan options too; I chose the Brisket Badass burger, and having been to Buck's Bar earlier in the day, it was no small feat to finish it.
Overall, The Winged Ox made a great first impression and very much seems the kind of place you could return to again and again without ever having to have the same drink twice or getting sick of it. While it was a little quiet and so didn't have much of an atmosphere, that's probably just down to the fact that I was there on a Monday night, which if anything just makes me more keen to return in the future. As usual, don't forget to check out my Instagram.
Score: 7/10
